Fold Out Bed Buyers Guide

The absolute need for extra sleeping quarters when you have company over especially during the holiday season is a never-ending battle it seems. Fold out beds come in many forms, and some are cleverly crafted to be dual-purpose furnishings in your home. Of course, there is the standard divan or sofa bed that unfolds from the bottom of your couch into a full sized bed. A unique selection of chairs that will offer similar results, but in the twin size mattress category. There are many people that would just put their guests on the floor with sleeping bags, pillows, and quilts, but that makes for a rough nights sleep and if that is all that is offered they will not be returning anytime too soon.

Many of you might remember the old styled fold out cot beds that your grandparents may have owned, and stored in the hall closet or spare boys or girls bedroom. This type of product is still available today, but a better alternative maybe the foldout ottoman beds that have started to become popular once again the United States. They come in twin and full size configurations, and work well with large sectional couches. Ottoman beds can have many uses, as they will accommodate three or four people when relaxing and putting their feet up. A double unit can also act as a backless sofa against a wall when not being used for a sleeping alternative.

One such item that is almost a lost art of sorts is the Murphy bed that was made popular in the 1920s and 1930s in the tenements, and hotels in New York, and Chicago. They were literally built into the wall of a studio apartment or hotel room, and would fold out when needed to sleep, but then just as quickly be put up for the extra living space needed in cramped quarters. Murphy beds are still available today, but at a premium of between fifteen hundred dollars, and five thousand dollars. This is considered a smart space furnishing, but at the same time a luxury item as they are not sold in volume like normal beds are currently.

The standard cot that folds up when not in use will be the most inexpensive route to take if funds are limited. The frame of the bed without a mattress will on average be at a hundred and forty dollar price point. You can scan the online classifieds, and auctions to find used ones in great condition for less, but always discard the old mattress, as you will not want to inherit the odors, and possible bed bugs from the previous owners.
